This paper examines how the Goryeo government secured military officers in the absence of a military examination(武科) during the Goryeo period, based on the analysis of Jeonjeong-yeonlib(田丁連立) records. The findings can be summarized as follows.
Military officers below the 6th rank, for whom the Eumseo(Legacy Appointment System: 蔭敍) was not possible, inherited land through the Jeonjeong-yeonlib system, along with the responsibility of performing various duties. However, in such cases, the descendants of military officers did not immediately become military officers themselves; rather, they typically entered the military service. Among these military personnel, some were descendants of the military officer class, while others came from a longstanding line of military service, responsible for the duties of a soldier. Among the descendants of military officers, there was a relatively high probability of advancing from military service to the position of a military officer.
The utilization of Jeonjeong-yeonlib and the Eumseo to secure military officers was a rational system unique to Goryeo, given the absence of a military examination. The regular military officer quota for the central military was 3,518 individuals, while only 151 military officers of the 5th rank or higher, eligible for the Eumseo, existed. Therefore, it was challenging to fill the military officer positions solely through the Eumseo, necessitating an additional approach for securing military officers, which was achieved through the Jeonjeong-yeonlib system.
