This study analyzes the libretto and stage art of the painter Mihail Chemiakin"s The Nutcracker, premiered at the Mariinsky theater, St. Petersburg, in 2001, to shed light on how he embodies the poetics inherent in Ernst Hoffmann’s fairy tale in the ballet. In this adaptation of The Nutcracker, the Mariinsky theater gave a "painter" the title of general director because they believed in his enthusiasm for Hoffmann and the "bright and bizarre" Hoffmannian character in his paintings. Chemiakin portrayed the main character Masha as a "child tormented by adults," and the Magical Palace of Confiturenburg as a "dystopia where sweetness and pain coexist", which, along with the colorful stage decors, creates a grotesque atmosphere. In Mihail Chemiakin"s staging, the Story of the Hard Nut - "a fairy tale within a fairy tale" that has never been depicted in a ballet - appeared as a major theme that penetrates the whole piece. As a result, Chemiakin’s interpretation of The Nutcracker is filled with the grotesque beauty of Romanticism, departing from the pursuit of idealistic beauty of the classical ballet, and this innovativeness is significant as it shows new directions and the future of the Mariinsky theater that has continued the tradition of the Imperial Theater.
