Esther Kinsky's ‘terrain novel’ Hain confronts the reader with special commemoration and mourning rituals. He focuses on the relationship between personal forms and collective cultural forms of memory. The grieving protagonist acts as a careful observer of the process of remembering. The memory of the deceased is not only present in the perceived mourning rituals, but proves to be omnipresent in the environment. Cemeteries and the historical sites of the Etruscan necropolises, which are considered a materialization of memorial rituals, characterize the northern Italian landscape in which the story takes place. Due to the interweaving of mourning culture with everyday life, the protagonist does not succeed in completely distinguishing her personal loss from the observed commemoration rituals or the environment in which she finds herself.
