Effect of Depression on Self-esteem for Elementary andMiddle School Students in Low-income Familiesand Mediative Effect of Peer and Parent-Child Relationship Kyungil Choi Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate how depression of elementary and middle school students in low-income families affects self-esteem and whether peer and parent-child relationships have mediating effects by age groups. 243 elementary and middle school students from low-income families in A region were surveyed. Data were analyzed as a multi-group analysis using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 18.0 version statistical program. As a result, depression negatively affected self-esteem, peer and parent-child relationships in both groups. Parent-child relationship mediates the effects of depression on self-esteem for elementary school students. Peer relationships played a mediative role for middle school students. Based on these results alternatives were proposed focused on peer and parent-child relationships to diminish negative effects of depression on self-esteem for children in low-income families.
