The purpose of this study is to examine the implications of Bartleby's death in Melville's Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street from the perspective of Marxist criticism and suggest a way to reform. Bartleby's death suggests not only his actual death, but also the collapse of the American industrial capitalist system. This study proposes Jae-seok Jo's socio-economic theory as a supplementary measure to reform for the American industrial capitalist system. The social economy can be a way to reform the American industrial capitalist system by maintaining a sustainable political, economic, social, and national system that realizes American democratic ideology, pursues humanism, and guarantees human rights.
Melville presents a view of history that pursues human dignity rather than material value through Bartleby’s death. Through the irony that humans, the subject of history, can eventually be sacrificed by the history they create, Melville suggests the ideal archetype of the human as a social, working, and acting being contrary to Bartleby, and highlights the need for the political, economic, social, national system that guarantees human freedom, equality, and happiness. Therefore, Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street can be interpreted as a masterpiece reflective of Melville’s ideas for humanism, social change, political reform, and progress in history.
