Bartleby’s ‘preferring not to do’ is analysed to be a logic or reasoning of preferential non-action that is consistent to his vision of his reality. It is the consequence of a wilful and rational agent acting through specified non-action to its inevitable consequences. Bartleby’s presence in his environment is interpreted through the principle of a dialectical
negation, a self-negation that is demonstrative of self-sameness into other difference (self-differentiation), a reflection of a self-other polarity. Bartleby is deemed to be of both wilful and non-wilful character, expressive of affirmative difference and a state of indifference. He is of an indeterminate unparticularized identity which challenges the reader to interpret the basis for his identity. Bartleby’s self-negation as self-specification does not make him more differentially distinct and determinately identifiable as it normally does for other persons but rather exposes an absence of projected self-identity, a negative indifference from which life and death is born. His inactive indifference as sameness is central to his fundamental being as nothing, his indeterminate non-identity, as a person in particularity of becoming within Melville’s dialectical narrative of Bartleby’s becoming and ceasing to be. His becoming is simultaneously anchored in the absolute indifference that precedes his individual becoming.
