In Breakfast on Pluto, Patrick McCabe reflects on the violent sectarian conflict between the Roman Catholic nationalists and the Protestant unionists suggesting an ethical way of remembering. This study analyzes Breakfast on Pluto using victimhood nationalism theory, which is a conceptual joining of the collective memory of victimhood and nationalism. Those who believe in the idea of victimhood nationalism acquire legitimacy by emphasizing their victimhood even though they inflict harm and pain on innocent people. With the main character Push’s voice, McCabe reveals all the voices of the victims oppressed under victimhood nationalism. Telling the stories in which individuals have been victimized by sectarian violence and hypocritical culture, McCabe liberates oppressed memories and discloses the nature of violence glorified and hidden in the paradigm of victimhood. In this way, he shows that the Irish who are setting the stage for peace processes should break away from the 20th century competitive victimhood nationalism and reflect on the troubled history ethically.
