This study examines both Empress Sunjeonghyo's(純貞孝皇后) royal trip(行啓) to the Kwonup-mobum-jang(勸業模範場) and the Sugyeon-sik(收繭式). In the Joseon Dynasty, in order to encourage agriculture, the king held Chingyeong-ryae(親耕禮) to set an example to the people, and the queen performed Chinjam-ryae(親蠶禮) to encourage women to do gilsam(길쌈). However, the Chinjam-ryae, which had maintained from the King Seongjong, held by Queen Jeongsoon of the King Yeongjo was the last one until Empress Sunjeonghyo practiced sericulture at the Changdeokgung Palace. The reason behind the resumption of the sericulture ceremony was Japanese commercial interest in raw silk, especially produced in Joseon at the time. In order to expand the sericulture industry in Joseon, Japan induced the queen to display sericulture. In 1909, Empress Sunjeonghyo visited the Kwonup-mobum-jang for the purpose of promoting sericulture, and the Empress's royal trip outside the capital was unprecedented. Empress Sunjeonghyo's royal trip to the Kwonup-mobum-jang and the practice of sericulture, and the Sugyeon-sik were closely related to the Japanese policy of expanding the industry of the sericulture in Joseon. Empress Sunjeonghyo's sericulture began in 1909 and continued until 1939. The empress's Chinjam-ryae, which also began in 1909, was held in a different way from the traditional Chinjam-ryae. The Chinjam-ryae of the Joseon Dynasty, a ritual for the queen to pick mulberry leaves, was omitted, and only the ritual for harvesting cocoons was held. The ceremony of harvesting cocoons gradually became a regular event of the royal family, attended by high officials from Korea and Japan. The Japanese Government General of Korea(朝鮮總督府) actively used the image of Empress Sunjeonghyo, as a means of propaganda. The empress's sericulture was produced as an motion-pictures. It was used as a tool to rationalize and propagate the Japanese colonial rule by issuing commemorative postcards containing photos of the Kwonup-mobum-jang and the Chinjam-ryae. Empress Sunjeonghyo's interest and passion for sericulture were very great. However, such interest and passion served as a means of exploitation rather than the development of the sericulture industry in Joseon at the time.
