In 2021, the Jeju 4.3 Research Institute published The Jeju April 3 Incident Through Women’s Eyes: Jeju Women Tell Their Stories. Through a close reading of one of the stories in the volume, the testimonial narrative told by Chun-ho Hong, I work to understand the impact of the scorched earth campaign on the life of an ordinary Jeju child and her family. Because scorched earth targeted both civilians and the environment, Emmanuel Kreike’s theory of “environcide” provides a valuable critical lens through which the politics of this April 3 testimonial narrative can be understood. Kreike’s theorizing aligns with the antimilitarist, antiwar, and peace activist dimension of ecofeminism that emerged in the 1980s. My reading of Hong’s testimonial narrative is therefore guided by an ecofeminist shading of environcide. Jeju April 3 women’s testimonial literature has much to offer scholars working in American and Korean Studies, but there is one audience that needs to hear these April 3 testimonials, the United States government, which has yet to take responsibility for its role in overseeing the violence that turned Jeju Island into a killing field at the dawn of the Cold War.
