To cope with increasing demand of higher fuel economy and stringent emission regulations in the global market, Geely powertrain research institute (GPRI) has been developing the new Dedicated Hybrid Engine (GHE) series, aiming for lower fuel consumption, lower emission, higher performance and NVH enhancement. GHE family contains two series variants: one is 1.5L TGDI with two derivatives of 3 cylinders, the other is 2.0 TGDI derivatives with diverse fuel economy and high power. GHE family is state of the art engine, being the first ICE conceived to fulfill the stretched targets of the next generation of hybrid vehicles for Geely Holding Group. Also GHE is modular manufacturing concept to produce the engine family in the existing engine plants, which are currently producing GEP3, 1.5TD.
In developing higher fuel economy variants, deep investigations of the required ICE working conditions led to the correct targets setting for whole BSFC map, BTE (42+ %), vehicle WLTC fuel economy but mainly at real-world customer driving condition. Then, GHE is being developed to serve high performance output combined with lambda =1 full map and also being compliant with future emission regulations and RDE.
The concept and development of GHE set in a high efficiency Miller-cycle and transversal combustion system with higher tumble and turbulent kinematic energy (TKE), lowest friction, improved mixture formation including new fuel injection system (FIS) with 350bar, higher 13:1 compression ratio, optimized turbocharging combined with high cooled EGR rates and water-CAC. Besides, utilizing frontier technology on cooling system and lubrication system, such as electric water pump, split cooling, CTAM and E-PCJ, GHE variants possess the best performance.
GHE HP, the developing variant with high power, provides the customer demands for fun-to-drive with 100kw/liter specific power and 40%+ BTE. This engine applies soft Miller cycle, the same combustion configuration to GHE with 10.5 compression ratio, higher flow intake port, and mechanical water pump with thermal management system.
Furthermore, considering strong customers’ demand on noise and ride comfort from eastern countries such as China, Korea and Japan, NVH enhancement set in assessment of engine concept design. Suspended injector is deployed to cut-off the transfer path from 350 Bar FIS, cylinder pressure rise rate is well optimized. Structural attenuation achieves state of art by optimization of key engine components such as cylinder head, cylinder block, bedplate and oil pan. Mass balance shaft and dual mass flywheel are applied to improve vehicle integrated NVH performance. Die cast aluminum timing cover with additional acoustic cover significantly attenuates engine radiated noise to pass the EU pass-by legislation 2022.
This paper describes the development concept of GHE variants in terms of development strategy, target, technology road map, system definition, etc.
