The essay analyzes the portrayal of diasporic identity in Min Jin Lee’s novel, Free Food For Millionaires, focusing on the challenges faced by the protagonist, Casey, as she navigates her hybrid Korean American identity in the United States. Casey’s struggle lies in reconciling her family’s traditional values with her own aspirations in American society. Not belonging fully to any community, political party, or culture, Casey is confused about her identity and lives in a hybrid cultural society. Bhabha’s concept of hybridity is useful in understanding Casey’s confusion and search for identity in such a society. Hybridity, as Bhabha describes it, offers an understanding of how diasporic individuals negotiate their identities within the context of the host culture. It recognizes the “in-between” or “third space” where newness and innovation emerge, and cultural differences are translated and transvalued. In conclusion, Free Food For Millionaires offers a deep exploration of diasporic identity, focusing on the experiences of Casey. The novel portrays the complexities of Casey’s journey as she grapples with her hybrid identity and navigates the challenges of integrating into American society. The conclusion of the novel highlights an important turning point for Casey. She decides to leave her full-time job and chooses to be with Eun-woo, a person with whom she can share her passions and daily life. This decision underscores the significance of individual values and personal fulfillment as sources of happiness and meaning in life. Min Jin Lee’s novel presents a multi-dimensional portrayal of the Korean American experience, touching upon themes of identity, class, gender, and the pursuit of the American Dream. Through Casey’s story, the author sheds light on the complexities and struggles faced by individuals in the diaspora, particularly in relation to their cultural heritage and the societal expectations they encounter.
