Gangsta rap has long been an important force in contemporary hip-hop music history. When the globalization and worldwide popularity of hip-hop music make hip-hop one of the fashionable and celebrated style in various cultures far different from its birth place— the US, gangsta rap also fascinates the world with its defiant attitude and the vivid features of the gangsta life from the brutal streets. However, gangsta rap, as a kind of commodity in the globalized popular music scene, is a genre deeply rooted in the US urban black ghetto community, where the defiance and resentment resulted from the long and specific suppressed history of the US black people, it is intriguing for a culture, Taiwan as an example, irrelevant to the history of black slavery and racism to make gangsta rap acculturate to its existent cultural and music scene without simplifying or transforming it. This is an inevitable process for any culture firstly introduced to an alien land, and the uproar caused in the local society often plays an important role for paving the ways and setting up the direction of the future development of that imported culture acculturating into the existent society. This essay analyzes the initial stage of Taiwan gangsta rap from the end of the 1990s to the mid-2010s, to examine how the middle class Taiwan rap music fans and musicians with language, cultural and technological privilege introduced selected features of the hip-hop music culture and gangsta rap into Taiwan underground music scene, and how the diligent pursuit of verisimilitude of the US gangsta rap music unexpectedly involves concerns of cultural appropriation, class blindness and the very intriguing deviation from the authentic core values of gangsta rap.
