The population of the region is decreasing due to the low birthrate and urbanization. The migration of the local talents from region to metropolitan area and the rapid decrease of the birthrate created many closed schools and empty houses. The acceleration of this phenomenon has the following consequences: The village will disappear, and there will also be problems with the country’s survival. Even in this reality, the government has not been able to offer clear solutions and the church has not been able to provide answers. Looking at this reality, I hope that the seminary will be actively in charge of the education to nurture ‘village keepers’, who save the village. It is because seminary graduates are willing to go to rural villages with churches as pastors.
Unfortunately, the current theological education system is not enough to handle the work. In the case of the theological seminary, the curriculum is focused on receiving theological knowledge such as theoretical theology, and practical theology is also centered on practice in the church. These educational contents are insufficient to contact the residents in the village and save the village. In order to compensate for this weakness, it is necessary to understand the village and to have practical tools and training to save the village site. The Moravian missionaries had “skill in one hand and the Bible in the other.” Therefore, it is necessary to make a major change in the curriculum, maintaining the basic framework of education contents.
The teaching-learning method should be a method to develop the cope-ability to cope with the field and the solving-ability to solve the problem rather than the one-sided structure that conveys the conventional knowledge. To achieve it, it is necessary to go to the order of AARA (Action - Analysis - Reflection - Action) to bring the problems of the village into the classroom. In the biblical research method, the Shared-Praxis method to find the vision of the kingdom of God, which should be realized in our village today, will be valid. Specifically, the method is as follows: First, find my story. Second, compare it with the story in the Bible. Third, use dialectical interpretation between my vision and the vision of the Bible and the Christian tradition.
The Bible answers as much as we ask, and theology has a mission to create a new history through dialectical dialogue between man’s needs and God’s answer. Therefore, the seminary will have to fulfill its educational mission to find the voice of God responding sensitively to the pain of the field and to raise church leaders solving the problems in the field, not dealing with callous theology that has nothing to do with the field question. Above all, the seminary will be responsible for saving the country as well as the church if the seminary can raise “Village Head Pastors” and “Village Keepers” to protect and save vanishing villages.
