The heritage left by industry raises a critical question concerning how a society will choose to remember and commemorate its industrialization history. While discussions on the cultural and material heritage of industrialization have emerged globally under the label of “industrial heritage”, North Korea remains an exception to this trend. North Korea holds a signicant position in the history of industrialization as an area where heavy industry developed notably early in the context of colonization, post-war recovery, socialist solidarity, and North Koreanstyle socialism. However, in the face of current economic diculties, the aging and stagnation of North Korea’s industrial facilities will likely lead to their closure or demolition. Despite this, there has been no proper consideration of how to commemorate and remember the industrialization history that these facilities represent. is paper examines the history of the “Sup’ung Dam”, a symbolic facility that serves to highlight the reality of “the heritage left by industry” and “the history of industrialization” in North Korea.
