This study analyzed unification and perception of North Korea among universities students in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam.
Hypothesis 1. Under the premise that “university students will show differences according to gender, political ideology, and monthly income,” gender and monthly income were important variables in universities students" perception of unification. Political ideology were important variable in the necessity of unification and the reasons for unification.
Hypothesis 2. Under the premise that “universities will show differences in perception of North Korea based on gender, political ideology, and monthly income,” gender and political ideology were important variables that showed significant differences in North Korean perceptions. Gender was also an important variable in North Korean knowledge and perceptions of the North Korean nuclear threat. In general, boys were more aware and threatened than girls in North Korea"s knowledge and North Korean nuclear threat.
As a result of this study, "political ideology" was an important variable in university students" unification perception, but gender showed more important variables than North Korea"s political ideology. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a variety of unification education programs to overcome differences in unification and North Korean perception according to gender and political ideology.
Logit analysis was conducted to find variables that influence unification interests of university students. Monthly income, hostile perception of North Korea, and knowledge of North Korea"s nuclear threat were found to be important variables. In order to raise interest in unification based on these results, it seems necessary to educate the right knowledge acquisition and to reduce the negative perception of North Korea.

본 연구는 부산, 울산, 경남지역 대학생을 대상으로 통일과 북한 인식에 관해 분석했다. 특히 2018년 이전 분단과 갈등의 정치적 상황에서 벗어나 3차례의 남북정상회담 개최와 북미회담 등 평화담론이 시작된 시점에서 대학생의 통일과 북한인식 연구라는 점에서 차별성이 있다. 이러한 분석에 있어 가설 1. ‘대학생들은 통일 인식에 있어 성별, 정치이념, 월 소득에 따른 차이를 보일 것이다’ 라는 전제하에 분석한 결과, 대학생들의 통일에 대한 관심도에 있어서는 ‘성별’과 ‘월 소득’이 중요한 변수였다. 하지만 통일의 필요성과 통일 필요 이유에 있어서는 ‘정치이념’만이 중요한 변수로 밝혀졌다.
가설 2. ‘대학생들은 북한 인식에 있어 성별, 정치이념, 월 소득에 따른 차이를 보일 것이다’라는 전제하에 분석한 결과, 북한 대상인식에 있어서는 ‘성별’과 ‘정치이념’이 유의미한 차이를 보이는 중요한 변수였다. 하지만 북한 지식과 북핵 위협 인식에 있어서 ‘성별’만이 중요한 변수였다. 대체로 북한 지식과 북핵 위협에 있어 남학생이 여학생보다 더 많이 알고 있고, 위협적으로 생각하고 있었다. 이러한 연구결과, 대체로 대학생의 통일인식과 북한인식에 있어 중요한 변수인 ‘성별’과 ‘정치이념’에 따라 통일과 북한인식 차이를 극복하기 위한 다양한 통일교육프로그램 개발이 필요하다. 그리고 대학생의 통일 관심도에 영향을 미치는 변수를 찾기 위해 로짓분석을 해 본 결과, 월 소득, 북한에 대해 적대적인 인식 북한에 대한 지식, 그리고 북핵 위협인식이 중요한 변수로 밝혀졌다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 통일에 대한 관심도를 높이기 위해서는 북한에 대한 올바른 지식습득 교육과 북한에 대한 부정적인 인식을 낮추기 위한 노력이 필요해 보인다.
