The goal of this paper is to address the characteristics of syntactic and semantic structures of English proverbs and the contrastive analysis of English and Korean proverbs from a cognitive perspective. In English proverbs, linking verbs, deictic verbs, causative verbs, possessive verbs, imperative sentences, and antithesis·parallelism are found as characteristics of syntactic structures. From examining semantic structures, the words used in English proverbs are ambiguous, symbolic, non-compositional, and metaphoric. Moreover, personification is abundantly developed due to the non-human subject transitive verb constructions. As a result of comparing English and Korean proverbs, English shows the aspect of a result-precedence word order, whereas Korean has a cause-precedence word order.
