This article introduces the thirteen war museums that I visited while in the Netherlands. That nation has many war museums, most of which exhibit its experience with World War II. After the German army invaded the Netherlands in May 1940, the German occupation began. Most of the exhibits in these war museums show what happened during that occupation.
In terms of categorizing the war museums that I visited, there are seven national museums, five of which feature Dutch resistance, liberation, and the nation’s experience with the Holocaust, while the other two were established by the military. The other six are public and private museums: four showing each region’s experience with war and two dealing with specific themes or figures. What was particularly interesting is that several of the private war museums featuring each region’s experience with war were mainly run by local volunteers. It is also noteworthy that the Institute for War, Holocaust, and Genocide is a major supporter of war museums in the Netherlands.
