In the present study, we analyze the exhibition display of children’s museum and apply Csikszentmihalyi’s Flow theory(1975) on the types and characteristics of exhibits that children can actively and voluntarily watch. Then we examine the problems, derive methods of improvement, and study the requirements that should be considered important to ensure that children can understand the intent and the theme of the exhibition.
Examples of children’s museums selected to analyze the composition of exhibition display through the Flow theory are three national and public children’s museums with a separate space for children’s museums. The permanent exhibition room in the National Museum of Korea Children’s Museum, “Animal Stories in Myths” of the National Folk Museum of Korea Children’s Museum’s permanent exhibition room, “How is Our Body?”of the Gyeonggi Children’s Museum. The types of feedback that can be obtained through watching these exhibitions were classified separately from internal and external environmental factors to examine tracking observation of field survey and interviews.
Accomplishment depending on feedback type of each case children museum’s exhibits and that of search and investigate type exhibition characteristics were compared to derive that the feedback depending on each exhibit type and the feedback that children receive by using exhibits must be immediate and clear for children to act appropriately according to the intent of the exhibits. Also, the search and investigate type exhibits that allow opportunities for children to select exhibits themselves and earn information about them is appropriate.
Moreover, the explanations of methods should be intuitive in terms of utilizing the exhibits and specific so that there is no error in cognition. In addition, due to the nature of children, the exhibition space should be open to enable active interaction with human factors such as companions and peers, and when the disturbances caused by intervention are removed by visual and auditory separation, conscious observation could be accomplished through Flow.
This study is not limited to the direct and indirect experiences that can be gained when the Flow theory is applied to the exhibition display of children’s museums, but it aims to make the development of physical and emotional environment that can support children’s autonomy that fits the purpose of children’s museums as basic information on the use of exhibits that children museum exhibition display should aim at. Also, continuous research should be conducted based on objective guidance on the methodology related to children’s Flow in the exhibition room.
