In this paper, we endeavor to explicate the role that faith (religious faith) plays in the promotion of happiness among religious practitioners in Korea. To achieve this goal, we adopt an interdisciplinary approach: we combine statistical data offered by a sociological survey with conceptual analyses offered by philosophical theories. According to the results of our sociological survey, the aspect of religious life which plays the most significant role in the promotion of happiness in Korea is religious faith (simply, ‘faith’). The nature of faith, however, is not uniformly understood by philosophers. In this paper, we will examine three theories of faith to be found in the philosophy of religion: the hope-based theory, the fiducial theory, and reformed epistemology. We will argue that the hope-based theory of faith can bear the most fruitful results in the pursuit of happiness in Korea.
