This study examines the speech level of Japanese and its shift (changing trend) by reviewing translated Korean subtitles of Japanese TV drama series Hotaru: It's Only a Little Light in My Life.
Speech level shift refers to changes in style and diction of speech, i.e. a shift in the level of speech during conversation. Basic level of speech in usual Japanese conversation has been determined by social factors. However, the level often shifts from one level to another, and recovers to the original level in a single set of conversation. This explains that shifting and variating speech from a basic level determined by social context to other levels selected by the speakers themselves serve as a mechanism to convey certain messages to the audience.
This paper aims to focus on whether original messages in Japanese are effectively delivered after translation into Korean by examining the shift in speech levels during conversations, and to review the role of speech level shift and translation style.
