This study examined the principle by which insiders define a marginal man in the folktale, “Story of Understanding the Language of Beast” as well as the meaning of a marginal man conveyed in the folktale. First, among the characters that appear in the story, this study regarded a person who can understand the language of beasts as a marginal man, who is defined as “different” and excluded by most people. However, these kinds of people candidly speak about their power and seem confident about their identity. Meanwhile, they do not consider themselves as special or unusual in a way different from others but simply as a member living in the community together. This was examined as the reason they can be candid and confident. On the contrary, this study regarded the district magistrate and the husband as insiders who make up the majority of the community. The insiders push out people who are different from them, based on their common sense and experience, to the farthest outskirts of the community. The entities who define a marginal man judge right and wrong based on their common sense. By such judgment, the insiders in the end place people who are not congruent with their thoughts at the border of the community. In a word, prejudice of an individual or group is a factor that defines a marginal man. Also, from the behavior patterns of the folktale characters, this study questioned the standards by which a marginal man is defined and could confirm it is meaningless to divide insiders and marginal men. Because the standards defining a marginal man were subjective from the beginning, it was clearly shown that anyone can become a marginal man and an outsider according to such standards.
