This study aims to analyze the discourse function of ‘-eun/neun geosida’ in spoken Korean language based on interaction and suggest meaningful discourse functions for Korean language education. As a result of spoken corpus analysis, it was the ‘unexpectedness’ function that emerged the most as the discourse function of ‘-eun/neun geosida’ in private conversations based on interaction. The ‘unexpectedness’ function means that the speaker expresses that a situation is different or unexpected than his or her expectations. This function can be divided into three sub-functions for the ease of Korean language education. The first is the function of ‘description of situations’ that the speaker describes his or her past experiences recalling them. The second is a ‘self-objectification’ function in which the first person speaker conveys what he or she has done or felt through a third party's point of view. The third is the function of ‘fact-checking’ that the speaker wants to check unexpected facts in the form of questions. Following the ‘unexpectedness’ function, ‘-eun/neun geosida’ appeared when the speaker was convinced about what he/she wanted to convey, like in written language. This study has significance, in that it attempts to verify the discourse function of ‘-eun/neun geosida’ which is meaningful Korean language education through a large-scale corpus, and the characteristic discourse function in spoken language that is distinct from written language is identified.
