The article named “When We are “Stateless”: The Emotions, Identity, and "Otherness" of marginal characters in Thai Short Stories Included” aims to study the marginalization in short stories Stateless and other characters by Bancha Ondee through a documented research methodology. By using the concept of marginal people presented by descriptive analysis, the study found that marginal characters express otherness of the area in two ways: The geographic area created by the pressure of state policy, and the area of the body caused by disabilities that were subsequently destined to be inefficient in fighting, bargaining and adapting of marginal characters, which was found how the characters show themselves through resistance, confrontation, struggle for survival, and merging into a new social state. The emotional and social dimensions of marginal characters found to be appeared through the “insiders” side who felt frustrated and angry when faced with marginal people. On the other hand, the emotions of "outsiders" or marginal people tend to feel angry at unfair treat. In addition, they often express feelings of sadness for their fate, including mistrust of unfamiliar surroundings. These short stories contain strategies for creating marginal characters. Interestingly, the authors express their views about the issues of statelessness, which includes being made into others with attitude or being compared with common people in the mainstream society. Readers are questioned regarding the issues of marginalization in society and an attempt to convince readers to understand human values reflected through the emotions, identity and fights of marginal characters. This is to dissolve “otherness” in Thai society.
