(Purpose) Although the budget is the output of policy makers regarding policy preferences and priorities, a clear classification method for IT and information protection budgets is still insufficient in Korea. In addition, systematic research on IT and information protection budgets of central government departments is non-existent. In this study, the trend of the IT budget size and ratio of all central government ministries and agencies during FY 2018-2021 (4 years) is analyzed. (Design/methodology/approach) This study investigates the trends of IT and information protection budgets during the four year period across departments and agencies of Korean central governments. It also conducts two sample t-test to see if there is any significant different between departments and agencies with the IT budge ratio. (Findings) The results of this study show that during the analysis period (FY 2018-2021), the overall central government's IT budget shows an increasing trend, but the ratio of the IT budget to the central government's total budget remains at 1%. In the case of departments, the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of the Public Administration and Safety, the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Justice, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare showed the largest IT budget in that order. (Research implications or Originality) This study indicates that the Korean government should allocate more budgetary resources on IT and information protection function in order to maintain leading edge in the era of IT. This is one of the first study which systematically analyzes IT budget in Korea.
