This paper is a article of Pojeo Cho Yik (浦渚趙翼: 1579~1655)’s point of view related to the book of Doctrine of the Mean (中庸) in the mid-Joseon Dynasty, when Neo Confucianism was overwhelming. At the age of 24, he wrote the Article of Doctrine of the Mean (jung yong seol 中庸說) which was explained the basic lines of the books related to the book of Doctrine of the Mean (中庸) to be written later. He wrote the Indivisual Opinion of Zhongyong (jung yong sa ram 中庸私覽) at 29, and wrote the Hard-earned Zhongyong (jung yong gon deuk 中庸困得) at 37. This paper examines the transitions and consistency of his point of view of the Doctrine of the Mean (中庸) in Korean History of Classical Learning, focusing on the Indivisual Opinion of Zhongyong (中庸私覽) and the Hard-earned Zhongyong (中庸困得). The early research on his scholarship started from the work of clarifying the relationship between Wang Yangming (王陽明) and it has been mistaken as one of the schools derived from the teachings of Wang Yangming, but it turns out to be absolutely irrelevant. His thoughts and arguments are so strong in the colors of Neo Confucianism, whicd is derived from the teachings of Zhu Xi (朱熹). And the scholars who knew him at that time absolutely did not define his study as the study of Wang Yang-ming. We can not say that he is the opposite of Zhu Xi, just because his way of distinguishing sentences of the book of Doctrine of the Mean (中庸) is different from Zhu Xi. Because Zhu Xi had already mentioned it in his other works. And although he had been associated with the Yangming scholars, they had never mentioned him as a Yangming scholar. Cho Yik regarded Zhu Xi as the best person after Confucius, and genuinely admired him. His submission of opinions different from Zhu Xi only added to his meticulousness to further strengthen Zhu Xi’s neo Confucianism.

이 글은 조선 중기 주자학이 대세를 이루던 시대에 살았던 현실 정치가이자 사상가인 浦渚趙翼의 『中庸』에 대한 관점을 경학사의 관점에서 문화다원론적으로 살펴본 논문이다. 조익의 시대는 이미 退溪李滉과 栗谷李珥에 의해 주자학이 조선에 일정 정도 일반화된 시대였다. 형이상학적 입장에서나 현실 정치학적 입장에서도 조선의 國是인 성리학이 자리를 공고하게 잡아가던 시기였다. 『중용』 관련한 최초의 논설인 「中庸說」은 이후 『中庸私覽』과 『中庸困得』 저작의 대체적 방향과 내용을 논한 것으로 그 두 책의 기본 사상노선을 예고한 것이었다. 「中庸困得後說上下」는 중용 관련한 마지막 논설로서 「중용설」로부터 시작된 자신의 『중용』관을 종합적으로 재천명하면서 정리한 글이다. 이 글은 조익의 대표적인 『중용』 관련 저작으로 29세 때 지은 『中庸私覽』과 37세 때의 『中庸困得』을 중심으로 경학적 전이와 일관성을 검토하였다. 조익의 경학에 대한 초기 연구가 양명학과의 관련성을 밝히는 작업에서 시작되어 마치 양명학자인 것처럼 오인되어 왔으나, 전혀 관련성이 없는 것으로 판명되었다. 조익의 경학을 가정의 방식으로 양명학으로 치부하는 것은 잘못된 결론을 도출하게 된다. 양명학으로 보기에는 주자학적 색채가 너무나 강하다. 조익 스스로 朱子를 높인 언설이 많을 뿐만 아니라 당시의 주변인들도 조익의 경학을 주자학 외의 것으로 규정한 바가 없다. 『중용』의 분절 방식에서 饒魯의 설을 채택한 부분이 많은 것을 가지고 반주자학으로 매도하는 것도 이미 朱熹의 설 가운데에 饒魯의 분절 방식이 먼저 존재했기 때문에 근거가 없다. 또한 그의 교유관계를 가지고 양명학자로 간주하는 것도 당대 사람들의 평가와 조익 자신의 글에 있는 자료들을 놓고 보면 전혀 근거가 없는 것들이다. 지각본선설이나 만물일체사상 같은 경우도 이미 朱熹의 저서에 내포되어 있다. 현실정치적인 실천성을 가지고 양명학적 良知良能의 실현으로 본다거나, 陽朱陰王說도 전혀 근거가 없는 것들이다. 조익은 朱熹를 공자 이후 가장 훌륭한 일인자로 평가하였고, 그를 존숭하고 심복하였다. 그가 주희와는 다른 견해들을 제출한 것은 주자학을 보다 더 공고히 하는 데에 세심함을 더했을 뿐이다. 경학사적으로 볼 때, 조익의 경학은 주자학의 테두리 안에서 퇴계학과 율곡학의 계열과는 다른 계열의 학문을 전개한 것으로 평가된다. 이것은 한국의 경학사를 풍부하게 하는 일면으로 연구하고 개발할 가치가 있다고 보인다. 그것은 조선의 유학사를 이기론과 심성론과 같은 형이상학 위주의 서술에서 더하여 경전에 대한 분류론, 구성론 등의 문법학으로 확장하는 하나의 전기가 될 수 있으며, 경도된 성인론에서 탈피하여 진리론 그 자체에 대한 탐구로 진전시킬 수 있는 큰 계기가 될 것이다.
