This study aims to analyze the elements of media literacy in social studies textbooks and to suggest improvements regarding media literacy which is important for citizenship education. For this purpose, media-related units were analyzed in the social studies textbooks of elementary, middle and high schools developed according to the 2015 revised curriculum. The results are as follows: first, the elements of ‘understanding media’ have been found overwhelmingly more frequently than the elements of ‘criticizing media’ and ‘creating media content’. Second, media literacy elements have been generally found more in the body texts and student activities than in reading materials. Third, it has been found that in politics sections, the parts on the roles of the press are being more emphasized than the parts on criticizing and watching over the press. In the sociology and anthropology sections, the elements of ‘criticizing media’ and ‘creating media contents’ are found relatively more frequently than other elements. Fourth, digital literacy is not being emphasized enough. In order for the social studies textbooks to contain richer and more various elements of media literacy, first, we should see the importance of developing media literacy in social studies education and identify it clearly. Second, the coming new social studies curriculum is needed to deliver the expression on media literacy and digital literacy more clearly. Third, developers of social studies textbooks need to be required to make efforts to reflect enough current issues related to digital media when writing the textbooks.
