The rise of “children” as a modern concept has been achieved through the process of separating children and adults in a society where education and information delivery are centered on “reading” and institutionalization of school education. However, the emergence of electronic media has bridged the gap in the distribution and consumption of information, blurring the boundaries between childhood and adulthood. Also, as part of the ‘self project’ aimed at self-achievement through nuclear familiarization and education, the use of media by children and adolescents is not only instrumental to achieving productive purposes but also a means of exploring ‘leisure career’ and sexuality during adolescence. This study summarizes the historical process of media literacy discussions in Korean media discourse through the analysis of ‘Big Kinds’ by the Korea Press Foundation. Media literacy emerged as a critical concept in deciphering visual culture, seeing that adolescents’ sexual deviance was caused by the stimulation of visual culture amidst the influence of video culture and the popularization of the Internet in the 1990s. The upsurge of the Internet in the 2000s expanded the discussion of media literacy in terms of technology utilization ability, information choosing ability, and community ethics. The emergence of smartphones and social media environments in the 2010s enhanced the competence of “prosumers,” empowering them to create materials, not only pertaining to information consumption, but also the discussion of media literacy. Since 2017, the political world has actively responded to the prevalence of “fake news,” and as one solution, media literacy has become an important discourse in determining an individual’s ability to choose information. In addition, media literacy education with gender sensitivity has been proposed to cope with adolescents’ media-mediated sexual deviation. This study attempted to contextualize the discussion of media literacy by examining how the concept of media literacy for children and adolescents has been applied in relation to media-mediated sexual deviations among children and adolescents.
