Male jealousy in romantic contexts often functions as an exciting, laughter-jerking device in medieval literature, where such jealousy drives characters into moments of ridicule. This article, however, seeks to underscore the affective darkness beyond the jolly facade. Through the critical lens of the history of emotions, I will demonstrate how the premodern cultural grammar of jealousy was highly influenced by suspicious jealousy in the scriptural tradition. Furthermore, I argue that such affective alignment is consciously embroidered with the syntax of mental illness, particularly via the trope of the jealous-husband. By surveying a number of examples drawn from Chaucer’s fabliaux and romances, I hope to underscore the way in which jealousy contributes to the complexity of medieval mental landscape via its laughable perversion.
