The Utilization of Initial Actuallyas an Inconsistency-Prefacing Device in Adjacency Pairs

Abstract: This investigation looks into the specific discourse functions of initial actually in the second pair part of Larry King’s guests in Larry King Live. Throughout the analysis of initial actually in adjacency pairs, the findings indicate that it can be considered as a strategic discourse manner employed by the guests in order to attain the aim of contradicting Larry King’s previous utterances. In addition, with reference to no in collocation with actually, this combination as an inconsistency-intensifying device is used by the hosts to intensify their contradictions, whereas in terms of well in connection with actually, this connection as an inconsistency-mitigating device is employed by them to mitigate Larry King’s face. In order to refute Larry King’s imprecise and misguided information, the hosts utilize initial actually. On the basis of a variety of institutional talks relevant to monologues such as presidential speeches, news reports, etc. or corpora for future studies, diverse types of pragmatic functions of actually in disparate locations will be addressed from a discursive-analytic view.
