After 1991, Georgia underwent independence and transition from the Soviet Union. In this process, Georgia put forward a strong nationalism as an ideology for the establishment of a new state by liquidating the legacy of communism within a short period of time. Due to its complex ethnic composition and long experience of domination by great powers, Georgia had no choice but to assert a single identity in terms of culture, language and religion in order to survive as a sovereign state. As a result, these actions were expressed as hard-line nationalism. However, Georgia's policy of centralization and territorial integration based on fanatical nationalism provoked resistance from ethnic minorities. In particular, South Ossetia and Abkhazia fought against Georgia by force in order to survive in order to preserve their culture and religion. In the end, Georgia lost effective control over about 20% of its territory due to conflicts with ethnic minorities caused by nationalism. In addition, in the course of a series of physical clashes with ethnic minorities, Russia's intervention was brought in, and the ethnic conflict in Georgia developed into an international conflict. As a result, the possibility for Georgia to seek territorial recovery on its own was further reduced. In the 2000s, the Georgian government took measures to alleviate nationalism, but it still maintains an ethnic-centered political and social system. Accordingly, South Ossetia and Abkhazia refuse to engage in dialogue for conflict resolution, citing Georgia's closed nationalism. After all, in Georgia, there is no war but no peace, so-called frozen conflicts continue.
