This research has explored the monastic reform led by William of Volpiano, invited by Richard II, Duke of Normandy, to Fecamp at the beginning of the eleventh century by focusing on responses to William’s reform in Normandy. Since William was influenced by Cluniac monasticism, he adopted Cluniac ways, which emphasised the practice of the Rule of Benedict, and brought them into the monastery of Fecamp. However, unlike Cluny Abbey, he established a school not only for the education of the clergy but also for the religious instruction of laypersons. Nevertheless, it seems that unlike the struggle in Mont?Saint?Michel, William’s monastic reform did not encounter any harsh opposition from monks or the clergy in Fecamp. Partly, this can be explained by the Cluniac movement’s popularity and the reputation of William, who had experience as a monastic reformer. However, the Norman dukes’ perspective should also be considered. The Norman dukes intended to improve the religious situation in Normandy by inviting William and supporting his reform policy. Furthermore, by so doing, they strengthened their political authority by improving their image as Christian rulers. In other words, William’s monastic reform displays positive cooperation between monastic reformers and Norman dukes. In that situation, even if members of Fecamp had any complaints against the monastic reform, it was not easy for them to reveal this.
