The imperial family’s property of the collapsed Korean Empire managed by the Governor-General of Chosen(GGC) under the Japanese colonial period had to be utilized as an important state assets of the new Korean government. This paper aims to investigate how the real estate and cash equivalents of the properties, except for permanent preservation, were managed and disposed during the U.S. Military Government in Korea(USAMGIK) and Syngman Rhee administrations of the Republic of Korea(ROK). According to the list of imperial family properties of the Korean Empire prepared by the GGC in 1943, first introduced in this study, the total assets of the former imperial family including land, forestry, buildings, and securities is 4,428,230,105 yen. The USAMGIK treated the properties as a quasi-Vested property, distinguishing it from the Japanese property. The USAMGIK said that it would manage this property well and hand it over when a unified government was established. However, the USAMGIK considered the properties of Unhyeon Palace and Sadong Palace as private property and allowed them to be sold. During the Syngman Rhee administration of the ROK, the properties of Unhyeon Palace and Sadong Palace are excluded from the state property and then only the last emperor and his successor’s property was set as state property. Except for the permanent property of the last emperor, the rest of the nationalized imperial property could be sold, and the proceeds from the sale had to be deposited to the accounts of state treasury. However, the Syngman Rhee government was indifferent to establishing a system to efficiently manage the nationalized imperial property. The Former Imperial Property Administration Committee(FIPAC) was not organized, only the Secretariat of the Former Imperial Property(SFIP) was established. General Secretary Yoon Woo-kyung of the SFIP sold and managed the nationalized imperial property under the supervision and direction of the President Syngman Rhee. In the absence of the FIPMC, the SFIP committed illegal acts such as selling land at a low price, intentionally not collecting the sale price, setting low rents, and illegally logging nationalized trees, resulting in a decrease in national income. Due to the inefficiency and arbitrary operation of the SFIP, the nationalized imperial property brought benefits to certain individuals and could not be utilized as state assets.
