Even if history shows ample cases of war or political violence that have been fought in the name of political independence, whether political independence can serve as a just cause for military attack has recently come into question. Many philosophers have tried to systematize various intuitive moral judgments on war and self-defense, and have come to embrace a methodological position called reductive individualism. According to this position, it looks to be questionable whether political independence can morally justify the infliction of potentially lethal harm. My aim in this paper is to show that political independence can be a just cause for war even on reductive individualist grounds. To that end, I will first explain the notion of just cause. Subsequently, I will provide what I take it to be the reasons for thinking that reductive individualism conflicts with political independence as a just cause for war. To substantiate my claim, I will give precise accounts of reductive individualism, political community, and political independence. Then, I will try to set the stage for my argument that even reductive individualists can embrace political independence as a just cause. To substantiate my claim, I will construct my own principle (V*) as a (partially) explanatory theory for justified killing.
