This study compares Oe"s short story, ‘Shiiku’(1958), with Oshima Nagisa’s film ‘Shiiku’(1961) based on the short story. It also analyzes the different representations of war in different genres.
The short story showed the harsh situation of the war through the pure gaze of growing children, while the movie focused on the adults who led the storyline. The movie criticized how people transferred the responsibility of the war to the black soldier, despite the government, military, and vicious landlords having started the war and changed ordinary life into madness.
Oe"s short story described how the main character developed from a child into an adult through encountering a black soldier. Contrastively, the movie emphasized the absurdity caused by the sudden appearance of a black soldier in the village. Depicting the madness of a small group, the movie underscored the madness of the government and military.
Analyzing the representation of the war in the short story and the movie, this study clearly shows the difference between Oe Kenzaburo and Oshima Nagisa’s descriptions of the war and America.
In conclusion, this study clarifies how the main character in the original story changed from children to adults in the movie, how the meaning of "breeding" black soldier is different, and how the definition of individual life in the war varied in the short story and the movie.
