This paper explores the semantic and syntactic development of the directional verb nay- from a grammaticalization perspective. As for the exposition with respect to the grammaticalization process of nay-, numerous theoretical issues, such as the role of the lexical source and parameters or principles involved in the change of meaning and form, are investigated. Since the verb nay- denoting "egression" shows diverse and peculiar semantic extension from the source meaning, relevant issues with respect to the conceptual domain shift and extension patterns are addressed based on synchronic data. Metonymy and subjectification are suggested as enabling forces to bring forth semantic development. In the process of the semantic change, desemanticization and generalization are illustrated as important parameters to engender semantic diversity. Additional issues for the development of morphosyntatic change are also examined, focusing on decategorialization, unidirectionality, phonetic reduction, and reanalysis.
