The phenomenon of polygrammaticalization, where a single linguistic element evolves into multiple grammatical functions, is a notable characteristic of the Korean verb ha-. This dynamic evolution highlights the adaptability and versatility of the verb within the Korean language. This paper aims to explore the diverse grammatical functions and semantics of ha- within a grammaticalization framework. Originally meaning denoting an action or activity, the verb ha- has undergone significant grammaticalization in Korean. It has transformed into a versatile linguistic element with diverse functions when added to nouns and adjectives. These functions include serving as an auxiliary verb/adjective, a discourse marker, and a derivational suffix. The polygrammaticalization of ha- demonstrates how a single element can become a central hub for grammatical innovation. It accommodates a wide range of functions while retaining its core meaning. This process exemplifies the richness and complexity of language evolution, where linguistic elements adapt to meet the ever-evolving needs of speakers and the demands of the language itself.
