As global climate change intensifies, the international community is preparing international countermeasures. These efforts are based on the adoption of the 1992 Climate Change Convention, the adoption of the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, the adoption of the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015, and the Strategic Action Roadmap on Oceans and Climate(2016-2021) in 2016 was adopted, the Paris Climate Agreement entered into force on January 1, 2021, and the United States returned to the Convention (ˊ21.2.19.), etc. These efforts of the international community are moving rapidly towards the goal of being carbon neutral by 2050.
Given that the sea serves as a means of carbon storage, the international community is making efforts to preserve the value and biodiversity of the ocean. Marine Protected Areas are suggested as the most cost-effective way to recover marine biodiversity and increase the adaptability of the sea to climate change. With these specific measures, the international community is making various efforts to address climate chabge. As a result of these efforts, UN SDGs Goal No. 14(Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development ) and Aichi Biodiversity Goal No. 6 (Fisheries Resource Protection) and No. 11 (achieving 10% of marine protected areas by 2020) require individual countries to implement measures.
Recognizing this point, this paper examines the international trends on the management of marine protected areas. which are suggested as a way to secure the health of the sea. After analyzing the current status and problems related to the management of marine protected areas in Korea, we would like to suggest effective directions for the management of marine protected areas.
