1930s’ Joseon Studies(朝鮮學)-movement led by Jeong In-bo, Anh Jae-hong, and Moon Il-pyeong initially started as a study of silhak(實學) and was categorized as a school of uncompromising nationalism. Then the movement laid the foundation for the later notion of silhak, along with the socialism school’s study of Joseon, during the after-liberation period. Jeong In-bo, who was the most versed in traditional philosophy, provided the theoretical basis for the notion and content of silhak to the other two scholars. As huh(虛vainness), ga(假fakeness), and uie(僞untruth) ran to an extreme in the silhak study in the later Joseon period, Jeong In-bo saw silhak as a revival of Joseon Studies and a natural reaction to the period of confusion, calling it an ‘academic school which pursues rightness and public welfare in the reality[實事求是]’. Silsagusi(實事求是) of Jeong In-bo does not mean everyday ethics or bibliographical studies. In fact, Jeong In-bo’ Joseon Studies and silhak were of the identical notion. This view was based on his thought that true learning is ‘searching for something unique or originality out of reality[依實求獨]’, and the thought of Yangmingism, which believed a genuine heart could move and get sympathy from the people. Jeong In-bo saw that Joseon-Studies were Joseon silhak and that Joseon silhak could have a meaning only when it was Joseon Studies, and Joseon-Studies could have a meaning only when it was silhak, vice versa. However, he did not think the three ideas, Joseon-Studies, silhak, and Yangmingism, were identical. His reasoning for defining Silhak as silsagusi-studies had a great influence on Joseon researchers at the time.
