After liberation, so far, Silhak(實學) has been one of the hottest research topics in the area of Korean history. The issues raised in previous research can be compressed as follows. First, does practical thought contain modernity? Second, what are the conditions that led to the formation of Silhak, and where did the force that promoted its development come from internal factors or new cultures that came out?
What will be the academic vitality of Silhak in the future? If we look back on the existing researchers, this will depend on the following conditions: Can Korean historians explain the historical challenges that must be resolved in this land in relation to the study of the Silhak? Also, can they find clues to solve the historical problems of Korea with the framework of the Silhak? If this task can be accomplished successfully, the Silhak will not remain in the products of 20th century history and still play its role in the 21st century.
