The concept of ‘Silhak’ is deeply associated with the concepts of ‘modernity’ and ‘the modern era.’ Therefore if the concepts of modernity and the modern era are stable, the concept of ‘Silhak’ is also accepted without questions. However, if the existing understanding of the concept of modernity and the modern era is under question, the concept of ‘Silhak’ is also questioned. That is what is happening these days. As the standard Eurocentric understanding of the concept of the modernity and the modern era has been seriously questioned and denied, the questions about the validity of the concept of ‘Silhak’ has also been widely raised. As a result, phenomena which I call the ‘deflation of Silhak studies’ are observed. This essay suggests an alternative understanding of the concept of modernity and the modern era—the theory of overlapping modernities—by which the rational core of the concept of the ‘Silhak’ could be preserved. From the perspective of the theory of overlapping modernities, the ‘Silhak’ was the Confucian tendencies which led the dynamics of the early modern East Asian Confucian regimes. The core esprit which these tendencies commonly share is the ethical and critical attitude which tried to renovate Confucian regimes for the benefit of the public.
