Commuting to school is the most essential passage for college students, and it is carried out throughout their higher education life. Excessive commuting time has a negative impact on college students" school commuting satisfaction, academic performance, health, and quality of life. However, there are few existing studies related to college students" commuting time to and from school, and the study population and scope are very limited. In this regard, the purpose of this study was to capture the factors influencing school commuting time using data from the 2016 Household Travel Diary Survey data, with metropolitan area college and graduate students as the study population. This study utilizes a multiple regression model for empirical analysis. The results showed that students with higher average monthly household income and apartment-style housing consumed more time commuting to school. In addition, characteristics that influence commuting time to school are more influential than individual characteristics. This study is the first to use big data to empirically analyze the determinants of college students" commuting time to and from school, and to determine that the factors affecting commuting time to school are not strongly associated with individual students and differ mainly by being influenced by their family characteristics. Therefore, the insight given in this paper, in terms of the efficiency of urban commuting, is that subsequent studies should differentially analyze the commuting behavior of working people to work and the commuting behavior of college students to school.
