This study argued that exploring the process of “change in reported speech patterns” should be accepted as the new content in grammar education. Furthermore, this study analyzed the use of a sentence final ending “-다고” in the reported speech phrase. Internet newspapers are used for exploring the grammar educational content of the new citation expression. The analysis embodied in this study is summarized as follows: First, where quotative clauses are made, the sentence types were divided into two categories, “the original listener and the real speaker are the same” and “the real speaker is assumed to be the original listener”. Second, the characteristic use of the sentence final ending “-다고” identified in each of these types was subtyped into i) when the actor of the quotative clause was revealed, ii) when the speaker was revealed in the quotative clause, and iii) when the quotative clause helped convert the discourse. Finally, based on these analysis results, this study proposed activities to be dealt with in future citation expression education.
