The illegal trade of Joseon’s red ginseng showed difference due to the implementation of international agreements and the engagement of foreign merchants after opening port.
Chinese merchants in Joseon entered the illegal manufacturing and smuggling of red ginseng in connection with Koreans after opening port. They had smuggled red ginseng to Shanghai and Yantai, etc., and had sold it at high prices, making a lot of profit. Most of Joseon"s red ginseng which had smuggled had flowed into China, and its volume had exceeded or had been similar to the legal red ginseng trade of 20,200~25,200geun(근).
Chinese merchants who had been engaged in the red ginseng smuggling had been divided into two groups: Yeongpabu(영파부) of Zhejiang Province(절강성), and Shandong Province(산동성). Those from Yeongpabu had been linked to Shanghai, and those from Shandong Province had been connected to Yantai. They had established a humanic and spatial network connecting Joseon-Shanghai and Joseon-Yantai, and actively had used it for red ginseng smuggling.
There had been many red ginseng smuggling by Chinese merchants, but very few had been exposure. It had been due to the application of special regulations and extraterritoriality between the two countries. In addition, Chinese merchants had used warships in collusion with Chinese diplomatic staff, and Yuan Shikai pushed ahead with the warship regulations(병선장정) to prevent the inspection of Joseon"s maritime customs.
The red ginseng smuggling of Chinese merchants and the response of Joseon and China show the strange entangling of the traditional tribute system and the modern treaty system under the capitalist world system.
