The purpose of this study was to analyze the data, characters, and image texts of Chinese emoticons from a linguistic and cultural point of view, and to elucidate the social background and cause.
Through data collection, word frequency and n-gram were analyzed. The research fields of Chinese emoticons in word frequency are related to culture, dissemination, and design fields, and have subcultural attributes and collectivist tendencies. In the n-gram, the subculture was found to have socialist and political tendencies in the process of being incorporated into the mainstream culture.
As a result of analyzing the number of syllables by extracting a total of 238 character texts, 2, 3, and 4 syllables appeared similarly, which reflects the simplicity and economic feasibility of Internet languages. Language variations such as pronunciation variations, semantic variations, and grammatical variations contain elements of deconstruction.
Emoticons act as a safety mechanism for expressing emotions, and in the situation of ‘Involution(內卷)’ in Chinese society, the ‘躺平’ emoticon represents low desire and resistance to overwork. In the future, it is necessary to continuously grasp and examine the current reality, values, and culture of Chinese society through the social image projected on Chinese emoticons.
