Report Errors
The purpose of this article is twofold. One is to analyze changes in 5·18 discourse over time, and the other is a causal reconstruction of the process of discourse change. For these purposes, we analyze newspaper editorial related to 5·18 published in Chosun Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo, Kyunghyang Shinmun, and Hankyoreh. The result shows that the 5·18 discourse reaches the present day through the periods of ① state monopolization of riot discourse(1980~1987), ② competition between riot discourse and protest discourse(1988~1992), ③ state recognition and social acceptance of democratization movement discourse(1993~2007), ④ re-emergence of riot discourse and institutional consolidation of democratization movement discourse(2008~2020). And it also shows that such discourse change is a product of the interaction between the memory struggle and the political opportunity structure.
