In this paper, while the issue of “subjectivity” that was prevalent after the defeat in the war was actively debated in the field of literature, we examine Ango Sakaguchi’s appeal for a new standpoint of self-awareness while presenting a position that is somewhat different from those debates, and the state of its embodiment in the literature.
Ango presents a process called “corruption” as a means of releasing his own desires, which continue to suffer due to the needs of society and history. The issue here is the various actions of society and history, which are transformed and changed like an organism. Ango is always pursuing the appearance of a human being who acquires the self while forming a tension with various actions of society and history. In short, in order to “discover ourselves” and acquire “self-reliance”, he argues that we must be wary of social systems and historical devices and be careful about it
Regarding egoism advocated by the “modern literature” group, Ango states that “egoism is rebelled against and avenged by egoism”. Ango talks about egoism, saying that egoism is rebelled against and revenge by egoism, but he does not expect egoism. Rather, in art, it prescribes that egoism is an object to be guarded against. In other words, it can be seen that Ango continuously presented a view overlooked by the discussion of contemporary “subjectivity” in the field of literature.
