The rise and popularization of BL culture is an important cultural phenomenon that is occurring contemporaneously in the global subculture area. This is influenced by various factors such as the development of the media environment, the “Me too” movement in the world-wide level in the mid-2010s, changes in the discourse environment surrounding BL, growth of core users, and strategic movements of the cultural content industry, including the idol industry. In addition, BL culture is produced and consumed in a trans-national manner beyond the cultural boundaries of a single country, based on a group of specific tastes that are formed with strong preference. In particular, in Korea, BL is permeating the daily lives of the public through various channels, and is gradually becoming an important axis of popular culture. In this trend, BL becomes a important research subject. In particular, despite the heightened resentment of the Korean public to the China, the favorable response of Korean audiences to Chinese BL content adds to the need for the research on Chinese BL and subculture. Of course, China’s BL has a remarkable specificity in its development pattern, especially due to direct and indirect intervention by related government ministries. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research that looks at this specificity as well as the universality of the entire global BL culture as a whole. These studies will include various topics such as the subjects of BL culture, BL’s dialogue with discourse environment, relevance to industrial ecosystems, nationality and trans-nationality of BL culture, as well as research on individual text and genre history.
