The demand for professionally trained counselors in India is increasing. As there are no uniform standards for training or a licensing body for counselors in India, it is imperative to review the curricula of counselor education programs. It is necessary to ensure the personal and professional development of counselor trainees and to provide an ethical service to clients. This study critically evaluated one of those factors: the personal development components in master’s degree counselor education programs in India. Three counselor educators and 26 trainees from three colleges in South India that were running postgraduate counseling programs were interviewed, and components of the courses that contributed to trainees’ personal development were identified. Some of these components included personal therapy, group therapy, small group process, journal writing, certain taught courses and supervised practicum. Intentional inclusion of these components in counseling curricula is necessary to ensure the quality of programs and counselor development.
