This paper discusses the similarities and differences in semantic role assignments of emotion adjectives happy and sad to their arguments, with focus on their occurrence in anticipatory-it constructions. It claims, based on a corpus-based quantitative and qualitative analysis, that even though both happy and sad assign an experiencer role to their animate subject, they differ in assigning a causer role to their inanimate subject: in predicative position, sad is able to assign a causer role to their inanimate subject argument, while happy is not. This difference explains why anticipatory it+sad constructions are acceptable and anticipatory it+happy constructions are not. It also shows that anticipatory-it+sad constructions are used more frequently than SPEAKER-sad constructions in American English, while they are used in similar frequency in British English.
