The famous painting entitled YeongYeongBaegUnDo (英英白雲圖) is widely believed to be painted by Kim Junghee during his exile on Jeju island, missing his friend. This study confirms Kim Yugeun as the composer of the poem written on the painting, and identifies, moreover, the followings:
ChuSuBaegUnDo (秋樹白雲圖, The Painting of White Clouds and Trees in the Autumn) would be a more appropriate title for the painting than YeongYeongBaegUnDo. The scene is considered to depict the Keumho(琴湖) villa of Kim Jeounghee along the Han River. It could be assumed to have been painted between May 1832 and September 1835, when Kim Jeounghee dwelled in that villa. Although Kim Yugeun is the author of the poem, it was Kim Junghee who wrote it down on the painting. The author of the painting has hitherto been known as Kim Junghee, but a closer examination is needed.
While the poem of ChuSuBaegUnDo by Kim Yugeun relates to the joy of being with Kim Junghee, the poem of ChuSuBaegUnSogDo (秋樹白雲續圖), a sequel to the former, refers instead to the sorrow of being distant to his close friend. The relationship between the two Kims could not return from the sentiment of sadness in ChuSuBaegUnSogDo to the joy of ChuSuBaegUnDo, but ended up in an irreversible eternal separation, a farewell of death.
